An experiential community engagement on Acland Street, St Kilda invited locals to contribute to the future of this treasured street, gathering feedback to inform a proposed streetscape upgrade and new public space.
The significant and controversial nature of the suggested upgrades required a careful strategic approach in an environment of complex urban change management.
CoDesign Studio worked closely alongside the City of Port Phillip’s community relations and urban design teams to gather feedback and ideas from a broad range of locals, traders, visitors, and stakeholders, using community workshops, on-site engagements and prototypes over two phases of consultation.
Results from the engagement helped Council make an informed decision on behalf of the whole community, and community suggestions for the new public space will also inform future designs and activations.
Overall, the creative engagement revealed a community that is fiercly proud of its identity, arts and strong local ties, and keen to ensure that St Kilda continues to reflect these values.
