Launceston City Heart’s CBD revitalisation project breathed new life into Tasmania’s most significant employment and commercial precinct outside of central Hobart.
In mid-2014, CoDesign Studio and Launceston City Council embarked on an ambitious strategy to engage over 10,000 stakeholders in the design and planning of seven key redevelopment sites – a complex program of urban change management and civic engagement.
Using a multi-pronged engagement approach including news outlets, social media, a website and place-based tools such as pop-up workshops and wayfinding, we mobilised the broadest possible range of stakeholders.
From this information we worked with locals to develop playful prototypes for Launceston’s public spaces, closing a street and energising a park with temporary furniture. This activated the CBD immediately, gave locals a sense of ownership over the changing space, and tested ideas to inform investment decisions. Launceston City Heart drew out the hidden energy and passion residents and businesses have for their city centre.
