CoDesign Studio delivered a practical placemaking training program for council staff and community members to empower locals to deliver and lead neighbourhood placemaking projects.
The CoDesign team empowered the St Albans community to transform an underperforming road space into a vibrant community asset for a weekend. Not only did the initiative enable the delivery of a highly successful short term activation for less than $5,000, but it also served to build a strong and productive working relationship between Council officers and the local community.
Structured across a series of workshops, participants were given hands on training in the basics of community led placemaking. CoDesign supported the process by providing mentoring and support at key times throughout the process, but in the end it was the local leaders who conceived and delivered the final transformation.
At the conclusion of the program CoDesign assisted Brimbank City Council in shaping their participation mechanisms to enable future similar projects to be undertaken.
